Main features of English style

There are two main stages in English style development.

In the Georgian era, modest and discreet interiors were full of grandeur, symmetry, strict lines and shapes.

However, Victorian direction was not so austere: the colors became richer, the furniture became more elegant and the whole decor more splendid.

Main features of English style

English style is multifaceted, as it absorbed not only old traditions of Britain, but also the cultural heritage of its numerous colonies. Yet, this eclecticism must contain the following traits:

  1. Classic harmony, symmetry, moderation, clarity of lines and shapes. The taboo is imposed on all the flashy and outrageous.
  2. The use of high quality natural materials like stone, wood, metal. English style, especially in the kitchen, does not tolerate any cheap imitations!
  3. Wooden details in English kitchen interior are never much. Parquet, panels, doors, kitchen furniture – everything has to be done from noble wood.
  4. Colors are varied, but slightly muted, excessive brightness and contrast are not welcomed. Popular shades are pastel and deep tones of green, dark red, mustard.
  5. Basic patterns are stripes, plaid, floral, vegetal and heraldic motifs.
  6. The abundance of textiles with a luxurious texture.

English style in the kitchen may be considered in two variants — classic and country. Classic kitchen is more strict, laconic and elegant. English country is cozier, home like, less ordered, but always solid, sturdy and respectable.

Kitchen layout

Kitchen interior in the English style is based on the principles of symmetry and functional space zoning. The center of the room usually takes up a large table of round or oval shape, which can be used for cooking (then it additionally has optional hanging shelf). The rest of furniture and a big stove with multiple ovens and many burners are placed along the walls.

If you want to implement all of this in practice, you definitely need lots of space. Therefore, it is unlikely to create a real English kitchen in a small space. You can combine two rooms and create a kitchen-dining room or kitchen-living room, however, the inhabitants of the British Isles rarely do this, they dislike free layout.
